Upstate

This prehistoric landscape, carved and forged by powerful geological and natural forces over eons, tells a beautiful story to those willing to listen. I traveled from the Allegheny Plateau to the Hudson River, across the Southern Tier, through the Catskill mountains and the Finger Lakes, and along the Genesee River. The pictures were crafted by hand from gelatin silver dry plates, similar to the technology available to photographers and land surveyors of the 1890’s. I created this body of work on the eve of a four- year moratorium on high volume horizontal hydraulic fracture drilling in New York State. The images are memories of a land as it was before being potentially changed forever.

Short documentary of photographer Nick Brandreth during his final weeks of shooting for his body of work "Upstate." This body of work, shot with his own handmade 4x5 gelatin dry plates, explores the vast and varied landscapes of New York State on the eve of a four year moratorium on fracking.
